Veterans Day

Veteran’s Day

I wrote this tribute to the Veterans in my family a few years ago.

I come from a long line of veterans in our nation’s armed forces. I would like to take today’s post to say, “thank you,” to the men and women in my life who have given their lives to keep this nation, “The land of the free.”

One of my favorite family pictures is a snapshot of four men. It was taken during World War II and all four men are in uniform. Those men are my grandfather, and his three sons who all served at the same time. One of those sons is my dad. The person who isn’t shown in the picture is my grandmother who kept the home fires burning while her husband and sons were all in harm’s way.

My dad served in the Air Force for 27 years. My mother also served our nation as she nurtured the family during Dad’s frequent absences and packed up to move to wherever the Air Force decided their next home should be.

My brother, Andy, followed in Dad’s footsteps and served as a pilot in the Air Force for 27 years. Much of that time he was overseas or away on temporary assignments. His wife also served in the military for several years before taking on the job of military spouse and raising a family as a part-time single parent.

My husband, Greg, also an Air Force pilot, spent 29 years keeping this country safe and strong. As is the lot of the military spouse, I kept the family together while he traveled to wherever he was needed. We too, moved to many different duty stations, making a new home wherever the Air Force sent us.

Not just today, but every day, thank the men and women who have given so much to keep this country safe. And remember the families that are left behind. Many of those children will follow their parents’ example and become our next generation of those who serve.
