Nikki is working with me, Elizabeth Tawney Gross, Certified Professional Organizer in Chronic Disorganization, and owner of Organizing For Everyday, LLC.  You can read the continuing story in the posts and learn along with Nikki as we organize her house room by room.

Now that Nikki and Mark can quickly get dressed for work, Nikki and Elizabeth will make mornings even easier by organizing Nikki’s bathroom.  The countertops in Nikki’s bathroom are covered with cosmetics, hair and skin care items, and prescription and over the counter drugs.

The first task that Elizabeth suggests is removing all the expired and unused medications.  Elizabeth told Nikki how she could safely dispose of unwanted medications.  They can be taken to the NM Department of Public Safety Office of Special Investigations at 6301 Indian School Rd NE, Suite 310, in Albuquerque.  The MedReturn drop box is available 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday (closed during noon hour).  Using the MedReturn keeps drugs out of the landfill.  It will also make the house safer for Nikki’s kids and pets.

Nikki tells Elizabeth that she often forgets to take her medications, and that is why the bottles were on the counter.  Elizabeth encourages her to get a pill case with the days of the week on it.  There are some that have child-proof locks that would work well for Nikki.  When they brainstorm about where to keep the pill case, Nikki decides she will keep it next to her toothbrush, so she will be reminded to take her pills every night.

Since Nikki won’t need to keep medications on the counter, they put the pill bottles in a box and store it on a shelf in the closet where the kids and pets can’t reach it.  Nikki will only have to get bottles out of the box once a week to fill up her pill case, so having it in the closet is not inconvenient.  Also the medications will not lose their effectiveness by being exposed to the heat and humidity of the bathroom.
