Nikki is working with me, Elizabeth Tawney Gross, Certified Professional Organizer in Chronic Disorganization, and owner of Organizing For Everyday, LLC.  You can read the continuing story in the posts and learn along with Nikki as we organize her house room by room.

Nikki and Elizabeth, the Professional Organizer, have gotten Nikki’s closet organized.  Now it’s time to tackle the clothes that don’t go on hangers, like T-shirts and sweaters.

Nikki has piles of clothes on top of her dresser.  There are also clothes draped across a chair and on the floor.   Elizabeth asked Nikki several questions about the clothes:  why there are piles, and how long they had been there, whether she picked items to wear from the drawers or the piles, where the clean laundry went, what the clothes on the chair and the floor were.

The piles on the dresser are there because Nikki can’t find what she wants in the dresser drawers.  After Elizabeth asked about the laundry, Nikki realized that she just added the clean clothes to the tops of the piles instead of putting things away in the drawers.  She also figured out she wasn’t really using the drawers. The clothes on the chair were what Nikki called “half dirty,” they had been worn but could be worn again before being washed, and the ones on the floor were dirty.

Elizabeth suggests they use the same approach they used in the closet.  First, weed out the clothes that haven’t been worn in a long time.  Because she didn’t wear the clothes in the drawers, most of them went into the donate box. Next Nikki pulled out any special-occasion items.   These were put in boxes.  They will be stored so they aren’t getting in the way every day.  Then the clothes were separated into seasons.

Using the same methods they used in the closet with clothes and shoes, Elizabeth Tawney Gross, Certified Professional Organizer in Chronic Disorganization, has helped Nikki pair down her shirts and sweaters to what she actually likes and wears.
