Nikki Works with a Professional Organizer pt3

Nikki has decided to hire a Professional Organizer to help her with her clutter. Now she has to find the best person to work with. Nikki’s neat freak friend, Amanda, as chronicled in the “Amanda vs. a Professional Organizer” series, has been offering to get her organized for months. Although she admires Amanda’s organized home, Nikki has realized that she and Amanda have very different ideas about organizing.
Nikki learned from her internet browsing that Professional Organizers can work in a variety of ways. Her dilemma now is to decide what she wants help with so she can find a Professional Organizer with the right experience and training.
Does she want to work on the whole house? She would look for Professional Organizer who does residential work. Does she only want to work on her closets? All residential organizers can help with her closets. Does she want someone who can design and install a new closet system? Some organizers do the installation themselves and will advertise that. Others can give referrals to companies that install closet systems. A Professional Organizer can help you define your specific needs before you have a new system put in. Many people find that once they organize their closets that they don’t need a new system.
Will Nikki want someone to help her organize her office at work or only her home office? Many organizers work in both residential and business settings. Does she need help to get her paperwork organized? Would a new filing system help? Some Professional Organizers have specialties in working with paper; others specialize in electronic organizing.
Are the garage and backyard shed areas she wants help with? If she has an off-site storage unit will she want someone who will work with her there? These are spaces that most residential organizers work in.
When Nikki examined several organizing web sites, she saw the term “chronically disorganized” several times. She noticed that some Professional Organizers have special training in working with chronically disorganized clients. She is wondering if she falls into that category. Is that why she can’t seem to stay organized?
Next time we will define different types and levels of disorganization so Nikki can narrow her search to those Professional Organizers, who have the skills to help her.
