Amanda vs a Professional Organizer pt10

Number ten in the continuing series, about how your neat freak friend, Amanda, differs from a Professional Organizer.

Amanda says that Aunt Sue has been dead for two years, and you should have gotten rid of her stuff already.  When you work with a Professional Organizer, she may help you to realize that you are not far enough along in your grief to let go of Aunt Sue’s things.  She will be able to make sure they are properly stored, and not damaged, until you are ready to make decisions about them.  Grief has an individual time line, and you alone must decide when you have reached the stage where you can let go of things.  That is ok; when you’re ready, a Professional Organizer will be there to gently help you.

Maybe you are willing to do something with Aunt Sue’s things.  Amanda says it’s all old, useless stuff, and besides; she’s dead and doesn’t care what you do with it.  But you care.  Aunt Sue didn’t leave you anything expensive, but the things remind you of her and make you feel better even though she’s gone.  A Professional Organizer recognizes that some things are important, sentimental, items and worthy of keeping for that very reason.  You don’t have enough space to keep it all, but a Professional Organizer can help you decide which pieces best represent Aunt Sue and what she means to you.  A Professional Organizer knows many ways of keeping your memories alive with just a few cherished things.

The thought of Amanda throwing your memories of Aunt Sue in the trash starts you crying all over again.  A Professional Organizer will help you honor your precious memories and still live an uncluttered life.

I’m looking forward to your comments.

How have you honored memories of your loved ones?
